Senior Training Group
Coach Jim Nickell
Senior Swimmers had a tremendous end to the season with some fantastic swims at the Age Group State
Championships and the Sectional Championships. The dedication, discipline, and determination that
was put forth from the group over the past 6 months was on display throughout March. It was a fun
month of racing.
I also want to thank all those Senior Swimmers not in the Age Group State meet that came to the
meet to cheer on their younger teammates - this is the type of team spirit that really shows and
really counts - from my heart - I am very, very proud of each of you!!!
Please read the Age Group State Meet report and the Sectional Meet Report for some meet details.
The article "Seasonal Flip Turn" covers some further notes from this past season and the upcoming
season as well.
A great season starts by building momentum on strokes and skills - which we work on everyday -
attendance to develop these skills is critical as is being dedicated to making positive
adjustments. All stroke development needs to be well underway by the end of April if you want to
race with improved skills in July.
Training development is underway and the group will see changes each week of April as we pick up
where we left off last season. Morning practices include a combination of skill development and
training. We use monofins and stretch cords in the morning and these items will help technique
and power in the water - again attendance is the key to this development and to having a great
summer season the foundation is being laid each day in April!
Swimmers UP:
Tim Biegel - Tim has done a great job developing his skills and put
himself into very good condition with hard work. The hard work paid off with a High Point at the
State Championships in the 13-14 boys and his first ever sectional cut (200 backstroke).
Dominic Ponce - Dominic brings excellent effort to every practice and
the hard work and great attitude is paying off with some top notch swims at the State
Championships.
Joy Bunting - Joy had an AWESOME Sectional meet - her times in the 100
breast (1:04.2), 200 breast (2:19), and 200 IM (2:05.2) were all Summer Junior National Standards.
In addition Joy is a consummate teammate and she makes our team better in and out of the water!
Emma Morton - Another person that is a great teammate is Emma Morton. Emma swam
great at the Sectional Meet - recording some impressive time drops in all of her swims. Again the
attitude and approach that Emma brings to practice makes practices more fun and helps the entire team.
I was incredibly impressed with Emma at the Age Group State meet as she came to cheer on the younger
swimmers and stayed almost the entire meet!
Swimmer of the Month - Tyler Bush - Tyler had exceptional
distance efforts at Sectionals in the 1000 and the 1650 freestyles. Tyler's splits in the1000 for 500's
showed his focus and toughness (4:43 and 4:42=9:25). His 1650 was the one of the best swims in the entire
meet - Tyler won the 1650, beating a very good field of swimmers - he took the race from the first 50
and truly would not allow anyone to race him - his splits were awesome (again by 500) 4:41-4:46-4:46
for a total 1650 of 15:39 - a drop of 23 seconds!
These are the results of a very tough young man that works hard everyday - A Well Deserved Swimmer of The
Month!

Race Analysis
When you get the swim meet video home you will need to download a meet results page for the events you swam. There are separate
sheets for the 100's, 200's, 400's, 500's, 1000's, and 1650's. You should print a sheet for each race. If you swam the 100 free,
100 fly, and 100 back you will need three separate meet results sheets. This will allow you to put several meets on one sheet and
really help when comparing swims.
You will also need a schedule of the events. This can be printed from the Loveland Swim Club Web site -- just go to meets and click
on entries. The Loveland Fall meet info can be downloaded and printed to help you find your races. I suggest you start with your
first race and complete it before moving to the next race. When you return the tape to your team please rewind so it starts at the
beginning. If you want you can include the order of events in the tape case so the next person does not have to print this out.
Warning: These 3 steps take time but the value is immeasurable!
First View - I suggest you time splits on the first time through. Remember that 50 splits are posted on the bulletin board. I
really encourage you to get 25 splits when possible. Record them onto a rough draft and put them on the meet results form after you are done.
Second View - Second time through record stroke counts - do as many 25's as possible (as long as you can see complete length)
Final View - record turn over rates. You do this by timing 2 complete stroke cycles and dividing by 2. You want to record to the
100th of a second. I strongly encourage you to do this for each 25.
Now put this on paper and with some study we can identify your concentration variable.

computer. Use the pdf file if you do not have access to Excel or if you want to simply print a copy of the file.
