Swimmers Core Values
TEAM - Is working together for the benefit of the team while showing team spirit by always cheering for others. Attending practice with a supportive attitude and leading by example. Being a supportive team member at meets creates an environment where all club members find success in the team ethic of swimming together.
“Happiness begins where selfishness ends.” John Wooden
WHOLE ATHLETES - Develop all competitive strokes and distances with the intention of becoming the most well-rounded athlete possible. They are committed to long term goal creation and competitive development, to self-assess successes and struggles, and to continually grow. A “whole athlete” is a strong practice and meet swimmer that is an example for others on the club to emulate to achieve success.
“Discipline yourself and others won't need to.” John Wooden
COMPETITION - The best competitors embrace competition and all its outcomes. Being an athlete that uses competition to challenge one’s comfort zone and to embrace struggles as a method of growth is more important to success during competition than achieving personal best times. Reflective and self-reliant competitors are a must for athletic success and growth.
“Be at your best when your best is needed, enjoyment of a difficult challenge.” John Wooden
COMMITMENT - Is reflected by embodying all our core values while being able to prioritize one’s time in a busy schedule. Managing all other activities so they do not lessen the effort to achieve one’s goals as a swimmer is the mark of a committed member of the club. Regular attendance at practice and team meets is also the mark of a committed athlete who values competition as part of their process and growth.
“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, it is a habit.” Aristotle
QUALITY - Is achieved by demonstrating daily practice and competition excellence. It is best measured by a swimmer’s performance, self-awareness, and being coachable. The most successful athletes listen well, then execute well, and finally compete well due to focusing on the quality of their practice and competitive swimming.
“If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?” John Wooden
BALANCE - Is being a well-rounded member of the club that excels not only in the pool with LSC but also as a member of their school and all other community activities they are a part of. Excellence needs to be a culture in all areas of life and must be fostered beyond the pool and competitive swimming.
“Work, love and play are the great balance wheels of man’s being.” Orison Swett Marden
